There’s been a wave of news lately about Joann’s stores closing across the country, and for many makers, it feels like the end of an era. It’s where a lot of us first picked out our own fabric, wandered the yarn aisle in awe, or discovered the thrill of buying “just one more fat quarter.”
But here’s the thing: creativity doesn’t shut down just because a big store does.
At Makeropolis, we’re not just filling a gap—we’re reimagining what it means to source materials. We’re your neighborhood alternative to big box crafting. We carry secondhand, salvaged, rescued fabric and supplies that are priced to keep creativity flowing, even on a tight budget. And it’s all curated with joy, not mass production.
We’re Here for the Makers
Whether you’re sewing, quilting, upcycling, or just playing around with your first machine—we want to be your go-to stash stop. We don’t have long cutting tables or fluorescent lights. But we do have:
• Fat quarter bundles from rescued fabric
• Scrap packs for experimentation and learning
• One-of-a-kind vintage prints you won’t find in stores
• Curated boxes of trims, thread, and bits that are ready to become something
Our goal isn’t to replace Joann’s—it’s to build something even better: a creative reuse community where supplies are rescued, affordable, and full of personality.
My Current Obsession: Witch Hats
Lately, my sewing machine has been covered in fabric scraps and quilted bits, all turning into one very specific thing: witch hats. I’ve been making them from upcycled quilts and unexpected textures, and I can’t stop. There’s something so satisfying about turning leftovers into something bold, whimsical, and wearable.
Each one is a little different. Some are soft and floppy, some dramatic and structured. Some are lined with orange satin. All of them make me feel like I’m stitching a bit of mischief and magic into the world—and that’s a feeling I want to share.
They’re a reminder that making is powerful. It’s rebellion. It’s healing. It’s joy. And it’s something we can keep doing, no matter what’s happening in the retail world.
