Why I’m Choosing Handmade Gifts for a Softer Holiday Season

One thing I’m gently holding myself to this holiday season is not carrying stress. Not rushing. Not piling more onto already full days.

When I realized I needed two gifts for a basket-style group exchange, my first instinct was to think about what I could go buy. Then I paused and reminded myself who I am and what Makeropolis has always been about. I’m a maker. I believe in using what we already have, in honoring the time and care that goes into handmade things.

So I went back into the archives of my own studio. Do you remember my army of mice? They’ve been patiently waiting, tucked away between projects. I chose one, gave it the sweetest little outfit, and now it’s headed into a gift basket for a very kind woman.

This time of year can pull us in a hundred directions. We try to make everything perfect for everyone else and forget to check in with ourselves. Makeropolis exists as a small reminder that slowing down has value. That creativity doesn’t have to be rushed. That making something with your hands can be enough.

If you can, take a little time this season. Journal for a few minutes. Take yourself out for coffee. Sit with your craft and let it be exactly what it is.
